Obama City has a population of about 30,000, and covers 233.11 square kilometers in the southwest part of Fukui Prefecture. Obama is located in the Wakasa region, which has served as an important link between China and Japan’s ancient capitals of Nara and Kyoto. As a result, the area was heavily influenced by Chinese culture early on, and a vast range of cultural artifacts can be found around Obama to this day. Another highlight is the Omizu-okuri (Water Carrying) Festival, an event that has been carried on for 1,200 years, along with other traditional religious ceremonies that continue to be preserved and treasured in the community.
Obama is blessed with a rich natural environment, with fisheries being the main industry. The community is also renowned for Wakasa lacquered chopsticks, Wakasa agate accessories, and other traditional crafts.

Declaration
The City of Kawagoe and the City of Obama have been close since the Bushu Kawagoejin moved to Wakasa-Obama in the 11th year of the Kanei era (1634). Both cities developed distinctively under the rich influence of the cultural inheritance left by their predecessors.
We hereby confirm the ties between the two cities, bound together through 350 years of shared history. We encourage the stimulation of economical, cultural and tourist exchanges, and seek mutual understanding and friendship contributing to the prosperity of both cities. We declare the pledge to be sister cities.
This declaration is made in duplicate for each city to keep.
Dated the thirtieth of November 1982.
